Casino – The Business of Gambling

Casino, the Martin Scorsese epic about organized crime in Vegas, is one of the finest movies ever made. The film is a masterwork of drama, violence and character study. It lays out an intricate web of corruption that centered on gambling and had tendrils reaching into politicians, the Teamsters unions and the Midwest mob based in Kansas City. The movie is based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese.

Casino features an incredible cast that includes Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci. All three are at the top of their respective games, but it is Stone as Ginger McKenna who steals the show. Her portrayal of a woman mired in greed and treachery is both resonant and powerful.

In modern times, casinos are a much different place. They concentrate their investments on the high rollers – people who gamble for long periods of time and spend large amounts of money. These big bettors are rewarded with free hotel rooms, dinners, tickets to shows and even airline and limo service. These are called comps, and they make up the majority of a casino’s profits.

The gambling industry is a huge business that makes billions every year. The games that are offered vary from table games like blackjack and poker to slot machines. Some casinos are independent while others are part of hotels or resorts. Most offer a variety of games and a fun atmosphere. Guests can relax and enjoy a cocktail or two while listening to live music.

As with any industry, there are some bad apples. Casinos employ a large number of security personnel to keep tabs on the goings-on and to deter cheating, stealing and other illegal activities. Elaborate surveillance systems offer a high-tech “eye in the sky” that can be adjusted to focus on suspicious patrons by casino employees in a separate room filled with banks of security monitors.

A casino’s mathematical expectancy of profit means that it is rare for a patron to win more than the casino can afford to pay. Because of this, most casinos offer generous comps to the biggest bettors.

Many people are not aware that there is a huge amount of gambling that takes place outside the casino walls. Lotteries, horse races and charitable events are just a few of the ways that people can gamble without going to a casino. While these gambling opportunities do not generate the same kind of revenue as a casino, they still provide a sense of excitement and adventure to those who want to try their luck at winning some money. However, these types of gambling do not require the same level of skill and knowledge as a casino game.
